SUPERAntiSpyware isn’t nearly as well known as the other products on our antispyware software lineup, but the application is almost at effective when it comes to malware protection. Despite what its name connotes, this application isn’t limited to blocking just spyware any more than products with antivirus in the name only defend against viruses. While SUPERAntiSpyware’s protection effectiveness is worthy of praise, much of the rest of the software is not.

This antispyware software can block and detect a range of malware, including spyware, viruses, Trojans and rootkits. The application is unfortunately not as effective when it comes to eradicating the malware it finds. The antispyware tool routinely leaves traces of infections, and according to some online reports, it left some malware running after it had supposedly removed it.

Its removal capabilities may leave much to be desired, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that SUPER Anti Spyware installs quickly and scans are likewise rapid. In fact, the antispyware software has one of the quickest scan rates of any product on our lineup, and full system scans usually take around 20 minutes. However, such notable speed isn’t without a caveat on this second-rate application: scans require heavy resource usage.

We’ve called many of the antispyware tools we reviewed resource hogs, but this one proves to be the worst. It uses nearly 200MB of memory while scanning, a number that is far beyond how much even the second most resource-heavy application in our lineup uses. Using your computer while the software is scanning isn’t really feasible because it renders your PC irritatingly slow.

SUPERAntiSpyware also lacks many of the features we looked for in the best anti-spyware software. Reporting options, a gaming mode and anti-phishing technology are not included in the application. Additionally, there’s no option to scan removable media you connect to your computer, such as USB drives or CDs, for malware. You can, however, schedule scans, and you can set them to run at times when you don't use your computer – which is a plus considering how much memory the application uses during scans.

Summary:

If you are in need of a quick and basic antispyware tool that excels at blocking malware, you may find SUPERAntiSpyware to be a good fit for you. Because of its poor cleanup capabilities, however, we have a hard time recommending this antispyware software.

SUPERAntiSpyware 5

Pros
SUPERAntiSpyware adequately protects computers against most malware, and subsequent scans are quick.

Cons
The software uses more memory than its competitors, and you’ll notice significant system slowdown during scans.

The Verdict

SUPERAntiSpyware works, but there are definitely better antispyware tools on the market.
