What is a Browser Hijacker?

In the past companies would entice someone by providing a free online download that may influence someone to install free software on their computer without knowing they were providing someone with information about their system and of or their browsing habits, then they would sell the information to a third party company.

Today, the trend is changing your computer’s default homepage with a hijacker that directs your Internet settings homepage and search preferences to the hijacker’s website or the hijacker will direct your home page address to someone else’s website for a commission. These same hijackers will redirect you too a search page or another website when you mistype a web address or the website no longer exists. CoolWebSearch (CWS) is an example of a browser hijacker.

Hijackers sometimes install toolbars that link to their websites or to companies that they have created an affiliate program with, or add browser helpers (BHOs have access to all of your browsing session's events and properties) to change your preferred search engine to the hijackers search engine.

Hijacker's sometimes add links in your favorites settings that are affiliated with their client's as well as change the settings in your registry files making it hard to find and remove.

How you may have gotten your Browser Hijacker.

You may be wondering how you got a browser hijacker on your computer system. Did you know that just by visiting a web site your browser is vulnerable to contacting a hijacker? Yes, it can. There are two forms of hijackers, one that can be unleashed causing your browser's homepage to change without your permission.

The other form of hijackers' area more serious; they are the ones that are executable files you may have mistakenly downloaded. There are a few browser hijackers that can load themselves directly into your computer system when you startup your computer.

What happens when a Browser Hijacker gets your System?

Once hijackers are installed on your system they become difficult to find and remove. Every time you change your settings in your browsers Internet options, the hijacker takes back control of your Internet settings. The more serious hijackers not only direct you to another website without your permission, they also can trigger pornographic pop-ups as well as add bookmarks to your browser. Browser hijackers can leave traces of pornographic websites on your system, as well as associate your computer system to websites that may be considered borderline by most law enforcement agencies

If an employer or spouse becomes aware of these traces of pornography that infected your system without your involvement, it may be difficult to convince others that you never visited such websites. Always check your system to make sure you haven't contacted any of these forms of browser hijackers.

How can I prevent a browser hijacker? One important thing you can do to prevent your Internet browser from being exposed to a browser hijacker is to keep your Internet browser as well as your operating system up-to-date with the most current updates and security patches. Also, Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine could possible be a problem. It seems to be highly vulnerable to security leaks.

There are browser hijackers that have found a way to exploit the security vulnerabilities in Microsoft's virtual machine. Download Sun's virtual machine at Java's website http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp. Once you downloaded the current security updates open your browsers Internet options pane and select the security pane, choose the default level button this will cause your browser to prompt you when ever you attempt to download.

How do keep my system safe? First, clean your system out completely. There are several programs available on the Internet designed to clean your system. Make sure you set your Windows settings to block programs that allow damaging programs to install on your computer system. Then install a good anti-spyware program and always keep it up too date.
