What is a "bot"?

The term “bot” is derived from the word robot, and is small a program that the computer system uses to carry out repetitive task for the user without them ever needing to worry about those tasks. A bot is mainly used by your computer to search the Internet for web pages or a keyword you're searching for in a search engine. An example of the use of a bot would be Google's spiders or crawlers the use to gather information for their indexes.

Methods of attack
There are several methods used to infect your computer with a bot. When you open your IRC client to chat to a friend on the Internet you can be susceptible to having a hacker use your IRC client to send commands to a hidden bot on your computer with the use of Phatbot or Agobot. With the use of a botnet and the IRC client, hackers can then use multicast capabilities to further exploit unsuspected users. These same bots hackers can use in a peer-to-peer system taking advantage of thousands of computer users to help do their work.
